Named for a river in Bulgaria, Maritza was conceived during a jam session with Pine Wilson and friends in Decorah, Iowa in 1998. Her passion for Balkan and Klezmer music grew out of her love for Balkan folk dancing. Sources of inspiration for Pine in the Klezmer realm have included the Klezmatics, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and the Andy Statman Orchestra, and Balkan greats Boban Marcovich, Ivo Papasov, Yuri Yunakov.
The lineup of players for the Great River Shakespeare Festival outdoor event will be: Pine Wilson, bandleader, on accordion and tapan; Ann Streufert on violin and flute; Elizabeth Finanger on mandolin, guitar, and percussion; and Hannah Breckbill on acoustic bass.
Maritza’s venues have included: The Great River Folk Festival, La Crosse, WI; Live on Winnebago festival, Decorah, Iowa; the Madison Folk Ball, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; the Door County Folk Festival, Sister Bay, WI; Harmony for Mayo concerts, Rochester, MN; live on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Simply Folk”; and other festivals, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and dance events in the tri-state area of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Maritza’s recordings have included the early Fires on the Shore, and Rekindled, released in the fall of 2011, featuring the 5-piece band, with guest performers clarinetist Kristine Jepsen, drummers Will Kemperman and Erik Berg, and guitarist Tony Guzman.
