Great River Guys: New Year’s Resolutions

Doug: Lee, why are you growing a long white beard?

Lee: I am Father Time. I thought you could be the New Year’s Baby for our Great River Guys celebration of the New Year.

Doug: Somehow I think our readers would prefer never to see that. Besides, I hear Winona already had a great holiday celebration, the second Live at the Levee – heated tent, great bands, good company. I hear you had a thousand people on the Levee.

Lee: That is true. Winonans know how to party. Just wait until next summer, and it will be even bigger.

Doug: We hope everyone had a joyous and restful holiday season, and we thought we’d kick off the New Year with a toast for good wishes to all of Winona from our company-

Lee: And to share what some of them are resolving for 2014.

Doug: We’ll start in the office with Emily Kurash, our new Director of Marketing.

Emily: I’ve never been one for resolutions, especially if they have to do with eliminating something I like or adding something that involves too much work, but this year I am gung-ho to commit: Spend more of my life outside!

Lee: Well, you certainly picked the right city to live in. How about you, Chris Mixon?

Chris: Here’s a quick list of my resolutions: In 2014, I resolve to: 1. Accept that my child can teach me more about technology than I can learn on my own, so I will spend more time learning from him. 2. Allocate more time to ACTUALLY connecting with my extended family and friends than I do VIRTUALLY connecting with them. 3. Stroll MORE on a treadmill, and scroll LESS on Facebook. 4. Support my friends more by actually going to see their shows and giving as many pennies as I can to their inspiring endeavors, and 5. Eat more healthy, do more sit-ups and go to church! Happy New Year!

Doug: That’s a great list. Gale Childs Daly is directing at GRSF for the first time this year. What’s your resolution?

Gale: Last summer Corey Allen gave up sugar and coffee and said he felt great and lost weight–so I am doing the same–it’s been rough this Xmas as I have been surrounded by cakes, cookies and eggnog–but I have persevered!  Cheers!

Doug: Corey looked great this summer. Then again, didn’t he always? Our Technical Director, Megan Morey?

Megan: I have been so fortunate over the years to meet many wonderful people and form incredible friendships all over the country (especially thanks to my time in Winona at the Great River Shakespeare Festival!); however, I have sadly not kept in touch with these friends as much as I would have liked to.  My New Year’s Resolution is to keep better in touch with everyone and show you all how much you mean to me. Happy New Year!!

Lee: These are terrific. We can do just a couple more. Tarah Flanagan? Paul Barnes?

Tarah: My resolution is to learn to read music.  I won’t be so ambitious as to resolve to understand music, but if I can learn to play a song on the ukulele my husband, Chris Gerson, gave me for Christmas, I will be satisfied.

Paul: To continue working to make the world a better place through the work that I do, and to strive to be a more tolerant, sensitive, aware, and accomplished artist, craftsperson, and human being. Happy New Year!

Doug: Wow that was a wide and wonderful array of resolutions, wasn’t it?

Lee: Yes. And no one except me wanted to lose weight. Donut? Bloedows.

Doug: I’m not surprised so much of our company is resolved to have more meaningful connections with people in 2014. My resolution is to be more intentional about how I spend my time. I want to spend more time with the people I love, and I want to spend it doing activities that are challenging and engaging.

Lee: Less time alone with the TV and more time at a Shakespeare Festival?

Doug: Yep. That about sums it up.

Lee: Pretty cool- so from all of us at GRSF we resolve to bring you the best theater, the most fun, and, without a doubt, the most memorable Shakespeare Festival yet!  Goodbye for now from Father Time and give a wonderful Winona welcome to the cutest Baby New Year!

Doug: Wait a minute… I am not spending the whole year as Baby New Year..

Lee: Goodbye from 2013….

Doug: Wait!
