Shakespeare in the Schools Residency

The third year of Shakespeare in the Schools began on Monday, April 29th. The artist residency brings Great River Shakespeare Festival teaching artists into the schools. The professional actors and directors work with students to increase acting skills and understanding of Shakespeare. The final result will be a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Friday, May 10, at 7:00pm in the Winona Senior High School Auditorium.

Twenty-two middle and high school students are participating this year. The GRSF company members directing the production include Kate Fonville, Doug Scholz-Carlson, Tarah Flanagan, and Christopher Gerson.

Shakespeare in the Schools is modeled on the highly successful GRSF summer program Shakespeare for Young Actors. Students are cast in unique ways with multiple actors playing the same character in some cases. This production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream promises to be very unique and unlike any other performance of Midsummer the audience has ever observed before. The script has been turned into a challenging but manageable piece to be ready in two weeks of rehearsal. Favorite characters like the fairies and the Mechanicals will be included in ways the audience won’t soon forget.

Thanks to grants from the Laird Norton Family Foundation and Southeast Minnesota Arts Council students participate at not cost allowing equal availability to all students throughout Winona. A $5 donation is requested to gain admittance to the performance. All funds collected will go towards ensuring the continuation of the Shakespeare in the Schools program in the future.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
